Blenheim Sprint Triathlon

TL;DR

Good race, warm day, great bike even with a dismount on the course costing approx 15sec per lap.

Pre-Race

Plenty of time to kill at the venue and got there to find out that on Friday someone had driven a bus into the pedestrian bridge, meaning it took forever to cross the bike course to get to transition, and also the bike course had a dismount so the pedestrians could cross safely.

Big cooked breakfast in the hotel to last me, nothing after that but a few nibbles. Didn’t want anything laying on my stomach for the swim. My wave started at 14:40, so not ideal.

Swim

Go DaddyAlex watched the swim start

Sun came out properly just as we were suiting up, making it quite warm during the briefing. Water temp was actually okay, could still feel all my extremities, which was a bonus.

Couple of sections on the swim felt actually really good and my 100m splits show it as well. Need to get back into the water to improve more.

Was in the bottom 20% of the swimmers, but just shaving a couple of minutes off over 750m would bring me up quite a long way.

Bike

Swim exit into T1Bike

Straight out and into the aero position, quick spot of Mum and Lindsey as I exited T1. Couldn’t get straight into my cleats, again need to practise a T1 mount from a run onto the bike with the cleats.

I had forgotten the hills, not much in the scheme of things, but as the course narrowed on the second hill, it was hard to pass, with 4-5 competitors abreast at some points.

Run

Last lap, coming past the palaceFinishing line

Had a slight stitch in my right side as I came out onto the course. It was about 2km into the run before it disappeared and I felt able to push a bit more.
